I thought I had run out of space to expand IMO but with my new display case comes a big space to expand with a separate Cargo Terminal. It's really easy to make an airport for yourselves guys no matter how small the space available so there are no excuses! You just need some imagination. My Cargo Terminal is located just along from Terminal 2 further down runway 36.

Anyway as I said it's easy to make an airport and I thought I'd show you my progress. Cargo terminals are easier than passenger because they don't require any airbridges - however I plan on making lots of containers.

Step 1: Buy your wood and plan out the layout.

I measured my space (1.2m x 0.4m) and bought a piece of mdf for it. Then I looked through cargo terminal photos on Airliners.net to get an idea of how they look. I decided to keep it simple. Most cargo planes in the Far East are 747s so I decided to make the gates mainly for 747 sized aircraft. To maximise gate space half the gates are remote with a taxiway in the middle.

Step 2: Paint the aprons

I bought the wood and planned it out yesterday. Today I got some paint and some terminal wood. Paint colours used were Humbrol model paint 61 for the main apron, 27 for the remote stands and 140 for the terminal top (out of shot) and taxiway edging.

By the way the cargo terminal will have room for 18 747s and 2 737s. I currently only have about ten cargo planes of the correct 1997 era so there's plenty of room for custom cargo 747s!

Step 3: Apron and Taxiway Markings

This week after work I've been adding the markings to the new cargo area. The different markings are:

Concrete Blocks: Pencil lines to denote the paving slabs that make up the apron. I only ever do these on the parking areas as taxiways often seem to be seamless and it would look weird if all cross-hatched I think.

Taxiways and Gate lines: Yellow pencil and gloss yellow paint edged with standard pencil.

Smudging: I use rubbed in pencil to make smudges around the gate areas to simulate grease, oil and rubber marks so it doesn't all look so new.

Gate edging and roading: White crayon again. There will be no airbridges so I made the markings a bit different to those at the passenger terminals.

Next I've got to do the gate numbering and terminal finishing.

Step 4: Gate Numbering & Terminal Decals

Gate numbers and terminal decals have now been added. These decals were originally supplied to me from Julian and have been very useful. I use yellow gate markings for the taxiways and blue gate markings for the terminal gates. The gates are numbered E01-E20.

One of the terminal decals Julian supplied had a floor level warehouse door (open and closed) so I used that decal repeated differently along the terminal front varying the width of the doors.

So the terminal is almost finished now and just needs some vehicles and cargo containers.

Perhaps a bit too huge for its own good! Most of my recent time has been spent decorating the new nursery and getting baby equipment which has necessitated a reorganisation of the hobby room so that Imogenia, my 1:600s and my 1:400s can all exist together. The hobby room is looking really good now but unfortunately there's no longer any room for the cargo terminal so all work on that has gone on hold and it is in storage. I haven't even got back to the upgrade of Imogenia yet.

I'm not sure what to do about GSE in general. I want to create better GSE but am not sure how at the moment.

Schabak produced many versions and now Schuco do one as well. Take a look in the model database and contact Wilfried to buy the latest version:

Search for cargolux on his site

Hi all I have updated the website to now have a page dedicated to the cargo operations - take a look at http://www.imogenia.com/index-7.html

I'm really glad I finally got around to getting this done! - its taken me a while!

I have used the new GSE I got and it works really well in the cargo area - even better than at the pax terminal.

Dude your custom cargo ramp and the models looking awsome! Will the cargo terminal connected to the rest of Imogenia?

Sadly not - there's no more room. In fact the Cargo terminal isn't even on display permanently at the moment. Expansion at Imogenia is on hold due to NIMBY action!
